A wonderfully captivating colour and seldom seen ‘on its own’; this original dark tone Herman Miller Eames RAR rocking chair is in a great used condition. Mainly used on the upholstered versions, it is uncommon to find a dark tone shell in this way by the factory and coupled with the walnut RAR base it looks amazing.
The diversity of colour really exploded when Herman Miller took over sole production of the Eames fiberglass arm and side shells and this was further increased not only by the colour of the fiberglass made available but also by the introduction of upholstery finishes designed by Alexander Girard. The addition of this ability to add either a vinyl, fabric or vinyl and fabric finish to these chairs dramatically increased the range available and allowed that personal touch when ordering them.
Individual Characteristics
The colour of the shell is still very consistent and strong and there are no cracks or dents present; only light, natural surface scratches which are to be expected with the age of it.
The ‘S’ within the circle indicates this a Summit Plastics shell produced by Herman Miller in their factory.
Investment Details
The Eames shell chair is an undoubtable popular chair and its near constant – with only a few years break – production confirms this. This popularity, naturally, builds interest and, like with anything, this interest gains investment interest which is determined by factors such as age, condition, rarity and various other factors. Dark tone itself is not necessarily a rare colour; being used on a lot of upholstered shells, but to find one that is, from factory, a ‘standard’ non-upholstered version makes this a little more special; it should be a reasonable investment piece.
