Black Herman Miller Vintage Eames Black ‘Military Base’ Side Shell Chair
A rather rare and interesting find. This is an original Eames Herman Miller black upholstered side shell on a prototype base creating a ‘military chair’. Christened as such due to the style of the base, this chair features height adjustable castors and armrests to allow comfort and easy mobility.
Herman Miller were famed for allowing contract constructions, pieces which, on large order, could be constructed for specific purposes/spaces. The origins of this style are unknown, except that it was commissioned by the US army, leading speculation to believe its being used in confined areas where office chairs would not quite suit.
The earlier shells had a base colour and displayed the wondrous texture of the ‘fibers’ in the shell. Later versions of the shells, introduced by Herman Miller, could also be bought with an upholstered cover, from vinyl to fabric. To create the amazing patterns on the fabric finishes, Charles and Ray looked to the esteemed Alexander Girard to design them.
The shell is in good vintage condition, the vinyl finish has no lifts, cuts or tears and the black shell does not have any dents.
The unique base is in good condition but shows some signs of its age. It is still sturdy and strong.
The ‘S’ within the circle indicates this is an original Herman Miller shell produced by their Summit Plastics factory.
The investment value of these beautiful chairs depends on many factors: the age and condition of the shell, the rarity of its colour, the age of the base and where the shell was produced. This is a very unique chair with a good condition upholstered shell. As a collectors piece, it is a very good investment piece.
