Beige Hopsack Pair (2) Herman Miller Vintage Original Eames Upholstered DSR Side Chairs
A pair of original Eames and Herman Miller white side shell chairs with beige fabric by Alexander Girard sat upon their used, new white gloss DSR Eiffel bases. These iconic shells have been lovingly finished in a striking hopsack upholstery that helps accentuate the versatility of the design.
The Eames shells’ history has been well documented, from their beginning in 1950 with only the arm shell to their much praised versatility being encouraged by the introduction of new base variants. Alexander Girard, the lead designer for Herman Miller, was commissioned to help design fabric and vinyl finishes for the arm and side shells available for both contract and general use. The designs he produced were vast and there are many variations of colour and fabric finish which emerged over the years.
These particular tops are in good aged condition. There are some slight marks on them but a small amount of work will restore them.
The interesting fabric upholstery is in good condition too with only some slight age related marks on it. There are no cuts or tears in it.
The ‘Herman Miller’ sticker on the underside indicates these are later versions of the iconic Eames shells from roughly the 1980s.
Eames Shell Chairs vary from 1 to 5 stars for investment. The reasons depend on so many factors but mainly the condition, the rarity of the colour, the originality of the base, the age and of course the maker are those that determine. Excellent examples of a lovely combination such as these represent a good investment prospect.
