Ochre Herman Miller Vintage Original Eames DSW Side Shell Chair
An example of a used, vintage warm ochre Herman Miller Eames side chair, with a complimentary light oak dowel base. Ochre has always been a very popular choice of colour, and it's not hard to see why- this light, buttermilk ochre serves as a very good decorative piece to a modern interior.
The Eames shell series chairs really do not need any introduction. With early prototypes beginning in the late 1940's, production began on the Eames' dream of 'chairs for the masses' in 1950 with the arm and then the sides later in 1952/53. The original and vintage fiberglass chairs were so versatile and so modern that they only increase in popularity as the years go by.
Fiberglass originals always have a base colour and gorgeous 'visible' fibers in the shell itself. The upholstered version was introduced by Herman Miller a little later on using fabrics and textiles designed by the esteemed designer Alexander Girard.
This beautiful ochre chair is in very good vintage condition, and the colour is still very much vibrant. There are some scratches and marks on the side of the chair, as well as some on the edges of the shell with a slightly larger scuff on the one side with a repaired crack - price does reflect this. The newer, used light oak DSW base is in excellent condition and will provide very good stability. The pictures differ slightly to the current chair, as it appears to be of darker ochre. Further images are available upon request.
Eames Shell Chairs vary from 1 to 5 stars for investment. The reasons depend on so many factors but mainly the condition, the rarity of the colour, the originality of the base, the age and of course the maker are those that determine. Nice Ochre shells are very desirable and an incredible investment for the price that they are.
