Purple Herman Miller Vintage Eames Upholstered RAR Arm Shell Chair
A Herman Miller original Eames white arm shell with purple hop-sack upholstery by Alexander Girard on newer, used, RAR rocking base makes a rather novel chair. Sat upon its dark wood, black frame RAR base this rejuvenated arm shell would make a fantastic addition to any home or chosen space.
Upholstered versions of the iconic Eames shells were designed with the assistance of the famous Alexander Girard who headed Herman Miller’s design department. He used a variety of fabrics and a wide range of colours to create an extremely diverse collection and versatile upholstered version of the shells that, much like the standard fibreglass shells, could be used in almost any environment imagined.
The highly fibrous white shell is in good, used condition reflective of its age, whilst the striking deep purple hop-sack upholstery does show signs of lifting or tears. Further images are available upon request.
The ‘S’ with the circle logo indicates this is shell originates from Herman Miller’s Summit Plastics factory.
The wide variety of Eames shells that were produced means the investment value for one particular shell is affected by so many factors. Collectors look for features such as the age, condition and colour of the shell along with the factory of origin to understand its rarity. There are many other aspects that play a part, but these are a good place to start. This particular shell has a rather unique finish and it should prove to be a good investment piece.
