Raw Umber Herman Miller Vintage Eames White Wire LKX-1 Lounge Chair
A unique vintage white wire Eames raw umber upholstered LKX chair for Herman Miller on its original low black base, the perfect example of the iconic wire chair. Finished in its raw umber Girard vinyl cover, this chair is a fantastic example of the early upholstery style also used on the fiberglass shells at the time.
The wire version of the iconic shell chair was released in the late 50s, creating a nice trio of available finishes of chairs – plywood (DCW, LCW), fiberglass and metal – for customers. The introduction of upholstery options for the fiberglass and for the wire chairs meant personalization could be achieved. The earliest upholstered options were designed as ‘slip-on’ covers, enabling the customer to change the colour they wanted when they chose – but were finished with vinyl edges rather than the later rubber edging which is more commonly known.
The wire frame construction is in good vintage condition. It has aged well but some signs of use and age are evident.
The vinyl upholstery is in good vintage condition too. Though a little worn with some of the edges slightly cut through from the wire – further pictures are available.
The Eames wire chair is just as coveted as the fiberglass shell chairs, being of the same family. Vintage versions with their original upholstery can really command a high investment value. This version being a great example of an early upholstered LKX chair on its original low ‘X’ base should be a very good investment piece.
